How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?
My product challenges conventions since a male is shown cooking alongside a female. Traditionally, cooking was a gendered task predominantly done by women, or at least expected to. It was odd or unusual for a man to cook, especially while living with a woman. This gender norm was set decades ago and is enforced by the patriarchy. In my film opening, the male character is shown cooking breakfast with the female character, his girlfriend. This successfully challenges the gender norm that only women belong in the kitchen by portraying a man completing a task generally completed by the opposite gender.
Another example of this is when the character of Sofia drops and egg right when the doorbell rings. As a result of someone being at the door, Sofia was not able to clean up the cracked egg on the floor. Since Sofia is going to open the door, she asks Luke to clean up the cracked egg instead. He does so without hesitation which depicts how Luke could be characterized as a new man. A new man is a male who rejects traditional gendered roles and takes part in domestic activities, such as cooking or cleaning, which was not done traditionally. I feel like this film successfully represents the new man since it is something that has recently been adapted into modern society and this product takes place in present time.
